How to Write a Metal Cut List for Repeat Manufacturing
The short answer: Give every distinct material and cut length its own line. Include the grade, profile, section size, supplied length, quantity and any tolerance or finish requirement. A clear cut list makes a repeat job easier to quote, produce and reorder.
If your business makes the same product regularly, material orders can end up scattered across drawings, emails and workshop notes. Bringing the cutting details into one list helps everyone work from the same specifications.
What belongs on each line?
For each part, record:
- Material and grade: for example, 304 stainless steel or a specified brass alloy.
- Profile: round bar, flat bar, square bar, tube, angle or box section.
- Section dimensions: diameter; width and thickness; or OD and wall thickness, as appropriate.
- Supplied cut length: the length you want delivered.
- Quantity: pieces required at that length.
- Special requirements: tolerance, finish, end treatment or material documentation where needed.
A part number or job reference is useful if you’ll order the same item again.
Separate supplied length from finished length
A machined part may finish at 100 mm long but require a longer blank for facing or workholding. Put the length to be supplied in the cut list and record the finished component dimension separately.
That distinction can prevent a batch of blanks being cut too short for the next operation.
Group repeated pieces
If you need 40 identical blanks, list them as one line with a quantity of 40. Give a different length or grade its own line, even if everything else is the same.
For example:
|
Material |
Profile and size |
Supplied length |
Quantity |
|
304 stainless steel |
12 mm round bar |
250 mm |
40 |
|
304 stainless steel |
12 mm round bar |
400 mm |
12 |
Add your required date and delivery location to the enquiry so the supplier can discuss availability and lead time.
Review the list when the product changes
Update the cut list whenever a drawing revision changes the material, size or blank length. Put a revision number and date on the list so an old order is less likely to be repeated by mistake.
Cut Length Metals works with businesses ordering metal cut to length for repeat jobs, with no minimum order quantity. Send us your cut list to discuss the material, cutting and supply schedule your business needs.
