Cut Length Metals: The Smarter Way to Buy Metal for Your Next Project

Mill Finish vs Polished Metal: What Are You Ordering?

The short answer: A cut-to-length order describes the material and its length; it does not automatically include polishing. If appearance or surface condition matters, specify the required finish before placing the order and have it confirmed in the quote.

A piece of metal can be the correct grade, size and length yet still look different from what you imagined. Finish is often the missing detail.

What does mill finish mean?

β€œMill finish” describes material supplied with its standard as-produced surface rather than a separately polished decorative finish. Its appearance can vary with the product and how it was made, handled and stored.

Mill finish should not be interpreted as a promise of a mirror surface or a completely mark-free appearance.

What does polished mean?

Polishing is an additional finishing process. The word can describe different results, from a smoother satin appearance to a reflective finish. Saying only β€œpolished” may still leave room for misunderstanding.

If you have a specific look in mind, provide a photo, sample or written finish specification. Explain which surfaces will be visible in the finished product.

What about cut ends?

The face created by cutting may look different from the original surface of the bar or tube. A requirement for polished outside surfaces does not necessarily mean the cut ends will be polished too.

State whether the ends need a particular appearance, edge treatment or machining allowance.

What should you tell the supplier?

Before ordering, confirm:

  • Material and grade
  • Profile and size
  • Cut length and quantity
  • Required surface finish
  • Which faces and ends need finishing
  • Any appearance standard or reference sample

This matters particularly for decorative brass, visible stainless steel tube and parts used in customer-facing products.

Get the finish included in the quote.

Cut Length Metals supplies stainless steel, brass and aluminium cut to length. If your job needs polishing or another special finish, contact us before ordering so the requirements and price can be confirmed.
